Black Belt Fiona!

Fiona Ard-Kelly is officially a First Degree Decided Black Belt, as of today!  She had her testing this morning, and that black belt looks totally awesome on her!  I hope to get some pics made soon of my little black belt taekwondo kids!

A Mermaid's Tale

Prince Edward (Alex) and a Goldfish (Fiona)

We went to see A Mermaid's Tale last night at Armstrong University, where the kids took their summer camp. It was really quite impressive, especially since the kids only had just over a week to learn the whole thing after they were cast for their roles.

It is a kids' performance, but I think it's pretty great. There were quite a few pauses while performers were waiting for someone to say their lines, and the sailors forgot their lines completely twice (poor Alex did very well without looking too upset--he's prone to freaking, you know). He was quite a dapper Prince Edward. I was very proud. Fiona seemed to have completely gotten over her disappointment about being just a goldfish. She had a lot of fun, and she made the absolute most of her role, with a huge smile and lots of energy when she made sound effects on the xylophone!

Grammy and Gramps came to see it, and I think Grammy enjoyed it a lot. She asked me right away if I'm going to put them back in this camp next year. Actually, I don't know...we'll see what they want to do themselves. The Jewish Center in town apparently does great summer camps, too, and a good friend just had one there focused on pottery and tennis. The camp is run by the swim coach, so all camp kids get to swim every day, too! We know a couple of other kids who go there some, and only one is Jewish!

I'll have to wait and hear the kids decompress a bit about the whole thing, and then wait and hear them decompress a bit after the next school opera. Then we can decide about next summer!

Michael made an excellent point last night. We enjoyed this play at least as much as the 'opera' that our school puts on annually--at GREAT expense. The Opera and the Savannah Children's Theatre keep giving the main lead role(s) to professional adults, but this Armstrong play only used adults for props and piano. In fact, the music teacher had three girls play one dance piece on recorder, and it was quite lovely. The choreography in the play was by Milne Cato, who attends our church and teaches creative dance professionally. She taught the Movement Class for the camp. I thought it was very lovely.

Anyhow, I was also proud of myself for recording the whole show on my camcorder. I spent the day clearing the memory card and trying to figure it out (simpler than I thought). I'm so glad that it worked, and especially that the battery lasted the entire time (I'd had issues with it during the day, and Target didn't carry that type of Lithium battery). The funnest part is that I'd found out in my day of camcorder manual study that we can play directly from the Camcorder to the TV, so
Michael plugged it in for me when we got home, and we watched the whole play again on our TV. It was kind of fun to see it focused on our kids much of the time! So yay for finally working with the camcorder, and hopefully I'll start to use it more often for these special events!
I posted a video only of a movement demonstration below, as the file for the play was too long, unfortunately. Fiona is in front (she waves at the end), and Alex is on the left amidst the green group standing behind her group. Maybe one day I can figure out how to pull out just a clip of a performance. Wouldn't that be nice?
